Your university application checklist
The documents you will usually need to apply to study abroad, and how to give yourself enough time to prepare them.

Most delays in an application come from missing or unclear documents. Gathering everything early means you can apply as soon as the course opens and respond quickly to any questions from the university.
Documents to prepare
Requirements vary by course and university, but most applications ask for:
- A valid passport.
- Academic transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English.
- English language test results, or evidence that you qualify for a waiver where the university offers one.
- A personal statement explaining why you want to study the course.
- One or two academic or professional references.
- A CV for postgraduate and professional courses, and a portfolio for creative subjects.
Plan your timeline
Deadlines depend on the country, the university and the intake. In the UK, most undergraduate applications go through UCAS, which publishes its deadlines each year, while many postgraduate courses accept applications until they are full. Popular courses can close early, so aim to apply well before the stated deadline.
Leave time after your offer for the visa stage too. For a UK Student visa, your university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) once you have met the conditions of your offer, and you will need to show you can pay your course fees and living costs. Always check the current requirements on the official government website for your destination.
